3D Laser Measurement Technology in the Aerospace Industry

Generic Engineering Robot for Damage Assessment (GERDA) for Turbine Blades

Turbine blades are among the most demanding components in aircraft and industrial gas turbines — even the smallest defects can have serious consequences. To reliably detect these, an innovative inspection system was developed as part of the BrightSky project in cooperation with the Royal NLR – Netherlands Aerospace Centre.

The new Generic Engineering Robot for Damage Assessment (GERDA) uses high-precision QuellTech 3D laser scanners to measure turbine blades automatically, contact-free, and from all sides. This generates high-resolution 3D point clouds that enable fast and reliable defect detection.

The result: maximum precision, shorter inspection times, and an important step toward digitalized, efficient and sustainable quality assurance in the MRO sector (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul).
