Non-Contact Inline Supervision of Welding Processes

Compensation of Thermal Distortion during Welding

Formation of burrs in the course of sheet cutting and punching operation cannot be prevented. These burrs must be removed, in order to set up a subsequent coating process (electroplating, powder coating or paint application), and also not to give rise to injuries. Deburring is accompanied by formation of a radius at the edge. This radius has to be inspected and measured continuously in the course of the production sequence.

Weld Seam Inline Inspection

Besides robot welding, welding guided on machine shafts still represents a usual procedure in industrial applications. Inspection normally does not take place before completion in a separate test routine. By integration of the quality supervision by a laser scanner directly at the end of the process, an additional test routine can be omitted.

This way it is possible to discover improper welding of a long seam (e.g. of a tank) without major delay, otherwise expensive rework would be inevitable. The same is valid for fine defects like cracks, pores or spatters. This prevents production of long passes requiring rework, or even scrap. The quality of the weld is documented at the same time.

Weld Gap Inspection with Slag Detection

A specialist machine manufacturer for welding systems was looking for a solution to improve weld seam control in a multi-layer welding process with slag detection in the deep gap. Previous offerings were limited, and unwanted reflections in the deep gap made the task more difficult. The customer also needed flexible software that he could customize and program himself. QuellTech implemented two Q4 laser scanners before the welding process to illuminate the side walls and bottom of the deep gap.

The reflections were minimized and the QuellTech QS View basic software allowed the customer to flexibly adapt the software to their requirements. This enabled the customer to have better weld seam inspection and slag detection, which sets their welding systems apart from the competition and offers investment security.

Fully automated Crimp Monitoring for Spindle Drives

Monitoring crimp connections is crucial for the quality and reliability of spindle drives in vehicles. Safe and durable connections are particularly important in electric tailgate systems, which are used in everything from luxury to compact cars.
