Practical implementations of thickness measurement, widespread in industrial plants and processes, are frequently used to ensure homogeneous application of material layers on a carrier surface.
A great variety of materials is involved, from metals or plastics up to natural products like leather.
A continuous supervision of the process is often imperative.
Particularly for glowing materials or wet processes, tactile methods are out of question, so a convenient non-contact measurement configuration must be established. As the speed of production cycles nowadays is permanently increasing, the detection rates of the equipment in use must be sufficiently high. A further parameter to be regarded is the measurement width.
QuellTech opted for a combined configuration of two opposed laser line models, mutually displaced in an angle of 180°, with the material to be measured passing between them (works with Q4, Q5 and Q6).
Each of the devices records a height profile of the corresponding surface. The height profiles of the faces are subtracted from each other, resulting in a two-dimensional thickness profile. With a transversal motion of the material (relatively to the profile direction), the result is delivered in form of a two-dimensional illustration of the thickness measurement in 3D.
This configuration for thickness measurement proves to be adequate for object width and measurement thickness ranging from only a few millimeters through several meters, for numerous materials. Considerable process speeds are not an obstacle, and even vibrations of the material may be compensated for.
The QuellTech user software in this complete solution enables individual tolerance ranges to be defined and trends -caused e.g. by worn tools- to be discovered. This means that the software can be parametrized by the user without further programming steps.
Random sampling in a separate testing station up from now is no more required. The product quality could be improved – the material thickness remains constant, and in the case of a deviation, immediate reaction is possible. Long term data are stored, thus allowing predictions for preventive maintenance of the machines. Total quality management enhances the productivity of the entire plant.
